Treatments at our Thermal Centre

The thermal centre

The thermal centre at Hotel Marco Polo is conveniently accessible in your bathrobe directly from within the hotel, thanks to internal lifts.

Affiliated with the Italian National Health Service for mud therapy, balneotherapy, and inhalation treatments, it has been awarded the Level I Super rating by the Ministry of Health.

It is part of the monitoring network of the University of Padua, ensuring the quality of the thermal mud, and collaborates with the Pietro d’Abano Thermal Studies Center to guarantee the excellence of its therapies through scientific research and ongoing quality control.

Treatment stages

1.

Medical examination

15-20 min

The medical examination by the hotel’s thermal doctor is essential to define a suitable treatment plan tailored to the patient’s specific physical needs.

2.

Application

15-20 min

The mud is applied to the skin at a temperature between 38°C and 42°C for a duration of 15 to 20 minutes in the case of general mud therapy.

3.

Thermal bath

8-10 min

The patient is rinsed off with a warm shower and then immersed in a thermal bath for 8–10 minutes at a temperature of 36°C–38°C.

4.

Sweating reaction

30-60 min

The patient is dried with warm towels and rests for 30 to 60 minutes to allow the sweating reaction, completing the biological effects of mud therapy.

5.

Massage

15-25 min

After the sweating reaction phase, the patient undergoes a toning or recovery massage to stimulate circulation and complete the mud therapy protocol. (Massage is subject to an additional charge, as it is not covered by the health agreement.)

Medical Prescription

You can undergo a course of thermal treatments by presenting a medical prescription (referral) from your general practitioner, pediatrician, or a specialist (provided the specialty falls under the conditions covered by the Italian National Health Service – S.S.N.), to be shown upon arrival at the hotel.

Guests undergoing thermal treatments with a valid prescription are required to pay only the medical ticket (if not exempt), which is to be paid directly at the hotel.

Our facility is affiliated with the Italian National Health Service (S.S.N.) for mud-balneotherapy and inhalation treatments. Other thermal services are not covered by the agreement and must be paid separately.

How to Fill It In

The prescription must include the patient’s diagnosis, the therapeutic indication, and the number of treatment sessions.

The validity of the thermal treatment prescription is one calendar year (365 days from the issue date), with the rule that only one cycle of thermal therapy is allowed per legal year (January 1st – December 31st).

Each citizen is entitled to one cycle of therapy per year under the agreement with the National Health Service (S.S.N.), except for protected categories under article 57 of Law 833/78, who may access a second cycle during the same year.

The prescribed thermal treatment cannot be split into different periods (e.g. May and September), nor carried out in two different hotels. The treatment cycle must be completed within a maximum of 60 days from the first to the last session, and always within the same facility.

The medical prescription covers only one of the following treatment cycles per year:

  • Max 12 mud applications + 12 therapeutic baths in 12 sessions = MUD-BALNEOTHERAPY
  • Max 12 therapeutic baths in 12 sessions = BALNEOTHERAPY
  • Max 12 inhalations + 12 aerosols in 12 sessions = INHALATION THERAPY

Patients in this category are fully exempt from the fixed fee of €3.10, provided the general practitioner indicates the appropriate exemption code on the prescription:

  • war invalids from categories 1 to 5 holding a direct lifelong pension
  • war invalids from categories 6 to 8
  • service-related invalids in category 1 holding a specific pension
  • 100% civilian invalids, with or without attendance allowance
  • major work-related invalids with a disability rating over 80%
  • totally blind individuals or those with visual acuity not exceeding one-tenth in both eyes
  • civilian invalids under the age of 18
  • victims of terrorism and their dependents
Patients in this category must pay the fixed fee of €3.10, and the general practitioner must indicate the appropriate disability exemption code:
  • service-related invalids in categories 2 to 5
  • service-related invalids in categories 6 to 8
  • civilian invalids with a disability rating between 67% and 99%
  • work-related invalids with a disability rating between 67% and 79%
  • work-related invalids with reduced capacity and a disability rating between 1% and 66%
  • workplace accident victims affected by occupational diseases
  • deaf-mute individuals
Patients in this category must pay the fixed fee of €3.10, and the general practitioner must indicate the income-based exemption code:
  • citizens under the age of six (up to 5 years and 364 days) or aged 65 and over, belonging to a household with a total income in the previous year not exceeding €36,151.98
  • minimum pension recipients over the age of 60 and their dependents, belonging to a household with a total income in the previous year not exceeding €8,263.31 (or €11,362.05 if the spouse is present), increased by €516.46 for each dependent child
  • unemployed individuals and their dependents, belonging to a household with a total income in the previous year not exceeding €8,263.31 (or €11,362.05 if the spouse is present), increased by €516.46 for each dependent child
  • recipients of social pension and their dependents

If the patient is not eligible for any of the listed exemptions, the doctor must cross out the “N” box on the prescription.

All patients undergoing treatment must declare on the back of the prescription, under their own responsibility, that during the current legal year (January 1 – December 31) they have not benefited from another thermal treatment cycle covered by the National Health Service, or that they are entitled to additional treatment as members of protected categories.

Mud therapy

The admission visit by the thermal doctor aims to fill out the patient’s individual treatment form, indicating the areas to be treated and the temperatures to be applied.

The thermal treatment area consists of individual rooms where thermal mud is applied to the skin at a temperature between 38°C and 42°C for 15–20 minutes in general therapy.

The patient is rinsed with thermal shower jets and immersed in a dedicated thermal bath for 8–10 minutes; an ozone hydromassage completes the treatment by stimulating blood circulation.

Dried with warm towels, the patient returns to their hotel room and rests for 30–60 minutes to complete the sweating reaction and the biological effects of the mud therapy.

The final stage of the treatment consists of a toning recovery massage (not covered by the health agreement), designed to reactivate circulation.
